Born in Jordan in 1953, Azmi mahafzah obtained his MD degree in 1977

from Damascus University, Syria and his PhD degree in Basic Medical Sciences (Microbiology and Immunology )in 1984 from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. He then completed a post-doctoral fellowship training in Virology at Yale University school of Medicine.

Professor Mahafzah has been working in the Faculty of Medicine and the Jordan University Hospital at the University of Jordan for about thirty years, during which period he has served as chairman of the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Forensic Medicine, Director of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the Jordan University Hospital, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dean of the faculty of Medicine from the 28th of October 2010 until appointed the Vice President for Scientific Faculties of the University of Jordan on the 1st of September 2013. On April 19, 2016 Professor Mahafzah was appointed President of the University of Jordan. He is a member of several scientific societies and committees. His research interests include; immunology, diagnosis of infectious diseases, Nosocomial infections and the epidemiology of infectious diseases.
