Hechmi Louzir is graduated from Tunis medical school. In late 1988, after a post-doc at Institut Pasteur in Paris, He joined the laboratory of immunology at Institut Pasteur in Tunis and, as Assistant Professor. He developed many research programs on the host pathogen interaction during leishmaniasis and contributed, at the University Tunis El Manar, to the development of curricula and teaching of basic and clinical immunology. He is author or coauthor of more than seventy original publications and several patents (h-index: 22, citations: 2147). He has worked in more than 40 research projects funded by international agencies and directed the research of more than 40 students.

Now, Hechmi Louzir is the Director of the Institut Pasteur in Tunis (since 2007), elected member of the executive board of the International Network of Institut Pasteur and elected member of the Assembly of the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He served, as member of the scientific council of many Research Institutes or Organizations including the French Institute of Research for development (IRD) and the "Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie". Hechmi Louzir is member of the Editorial Board of PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases and serves, as reviewer, for several scientific journals and, as expert, in international research organizations, including the World Health Organization.
