Recently retired after 37 years at the Royal Society of Chemistry as Foreign Secretary, he helped to establish new Chemical and Scientific/Engineering Societies in Botswana and Malawi and drafted constitutions for those bodies and for the Federation of African Societies of Chemistry. He was RSC’s representative on the American Chemical Society’s International Committee, was a member of ACS’s sub-Committee on Human Rights, Secretary to the UK delegation at the IUPAC General Assembly and to the IUPAC Committee on Chemical Research Applied to World Needs. He was Project Leader establishing research interactions between township-based students and universities around Cape Town on water usage and purification. He was also a member of the IUPAC workshop on Middle East Regional Cooperation and Sustainable Water Management.

He has been a member of the organising committee of the Malta conferences on Research and Education in the Middle East – A Bridge to Peace headed by Zafra Lerman. These meetings bring together Israelis, Palestinians and scientists from up to 14 Middle East countries to discuss scientific collaboration and issues of human rights. He actively participated in many of these, including the 2011 conference at UNESCO in Paris – the final event of the International Year of Chemistry. In this context, he was instrumental in liaising with the Ethiopian Chemical Society and the Federation of African Chemical Societies that made the case to the UN for IYC.
