Mark Heron is responsible for all control systems and for scientific computing for the accelerators and instruments that make up Diamond Light Source. Including, all distributed control systems, equipment protect systems, electronic design and support, precision motion systems, scientific computing, and personnel safety systems. This was for the initial design and construction of Diamond and now for the ongoing operation of the facility. These responsibilities are realized through: the management of the Control Systems Group, project management, giving technical direction, wider management within Diamond and internationally in support of other facilities. He is a member of a number of international review and advisory committees, include: Computing and Electronics Advisory Committee, SOLEIL Light Source, France, (2010 to present, Chair 2013 to present); Technical Advisory Committee, European Spallation Source, Sweden, (2013 to present, Co-chair 2016 to present); Annual Project Review, ESS, Sweden (2013 to present, Chair of Integrated Control System sub-committee 2016 to present); Projects Peer Review Panel, STFC, UK (2015 to present); Machine Advisory Committee, SESAME Light Source, Auspices of UNESCO, Jordan (2011 to present); International Scientific Advisory Committee, ICALEPCS (2011 to present).
