I am a Consultant Cardiologist and currently serving as the Vice-Chancellor and President of UCSI University, a private comprehensive university in Kuala Lumpur. I am a Fellow and Council Member of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. I also serve on the National Science Council of Malaysia, the apex science policy body chaired by the Prime Minister of Malaysia. I represent Malaysia on the Global Research Council. My research interests are in cardiovascular diseases and hypertension, and I am currently on the Steering Committee of a 20 country research consortium Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology Study, the RESPOND Study (grant from Newton Fund, United Kingdom) and HOPE-4 Study (a research project in the Grand Challenges Canada, a grant from Canadian Health Institutes of Research). I have published quite widely, including in top journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association and Lancet. My h-index is 23 with a citation of over 3600.  Prior to the current appointment, I served as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Malaysia and later as the Foundation Dean, Faculty of  Medicine, Universiti Teknologi MARA.
