I have been focused on studying epigenetic regulation including miRNA and DNA methyltransferases DNMTs, in Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) sepsis, cystic fibrosis and cancer. For more than 10 years, I was one of few scientists who start looking at epigenetic regulation in IPF and lung fibrosis. We are the first one who found methylation of miR17-92 cluster in IPF which leads to repression of the cluster expression while elaborate the expression of its fibrotic targeted gens. Also, we discovered the negative feedback loop of the cluster in IPF which can used as a potential therapeutic treatment for IPF. Beside, we currently are examining the interplay of the autophagy pathway with DNMTs. we found dysfunctional autophagy that increase with increase severity of the disease. Furthermore, we are investigating how macrophages communicate via secreted microparticles (MVs) which are taken-up by neighboring epithelium in cancer. We believe that our observations are universal and can be expanded to fibrotic diseases and cancer involving other organs.
