Ryan Bowles is the Regional Environmental Officer and Director of the United States Department of State’s Regional Environment, Science, Technology and Health Hub for the Middle East and North Africa region, based at the United States Embassy in Amman, Jordan.  He has served in this position since August 2016.

 

Prior to this assignment, Mr. Bowles served as the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs.

 

Mr. Bowles has also served as head of the Trade Unit in the Economic Section of the United States Embassy in Seoul.  Mr. Bowles was previously head of the economic section at the United States Embassy in Accra, Ghana, and the African Union Desk Officer in the Bureau of African Affairs at the Department of State in Washington, D.C.  Other assignments include service at the U.S. Mission to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, Nigeria.  Mr. Bowles joined the Foreign Service in 2004.

 

Mr. Bowles was born outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota and grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis and Chicago.  He received a degree in business administration and management from Boston University.  Before becoming a Foreign Service Officer, Mr. Bowles worked in management positions with the Boston Red Sox and with Sears, Roebuck & Co.  Mr. Bowles speaks French and English and has studied Korean.  He is married to Jihyun Bowles.
