Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar, T.I. is the first tenured Prof of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, and currently working as Rector, CIIT.  Prof. Qamar has previously served as Dean of Research, Innovation and Commercialization and due to his efforts, CIIT as an institution became the first higher educational institution to publish more than 1000 impact factor publications during a calendar year 2015. A Population Geneticist by training, Prof. Raheel has published widely in the most reputable peer-reviewed international journals such as Nature Genetics and published numerous research articles in national & international journals with a cumulative impact factor.  Prof. Raheel’s research has primarily focused on endemic and prevalent genetic diseases that are found in Pakistan, such as Night Blindness and Genetic basis of cancer. As a Wellcome Trust Fellow at the University of Oxford, he conducted research with leading scientist of world in the field of Genetics. He had earlier acquired his doctoral degree from the University of North Texas through a Welch Foundation fellowship. The diseases which Prof. Raheel has investigated include Eye disorders, Deafness, Mental retardation, Thalassemia, Heart Diseases, Hypercholesterolemia and Hepatitis C. Further research in being conducted to find a cure of the diseases whose genetic basis have been determined, due in part to the research carried out by Prof. Qamar.
