Through my work in the area of tobacco smoking in Jordan, I gained a scientific understanding of the role of waterpipe smoking in both young adult and adolescent populations. My expertise translated into assessing the problem of tobacco use and designing and implementing interventions to prevent and reduce tobacco use in vulnerable populations. Currently, I am Principal Investigator [PI] on several studies that explore knowledge, perceptions, and behaviors surrounding the use of waterpipe among adolescents and adults. I have published frequently on the subjects of waterpipe use; dual tobacco use (i.e. use of both cigarettes and waterpipe); and the relationship between tobacco and religion, the perception of health, cannabis use, and other risky behaviors. My most recent grants was funded through the American University of Beirut (AUB), and it tested the effectiveness of a waterpipe smoking cessation intervention for Jordanian school students. Other recent projects include assessing nicotine dependence among adult smokers. In addition, I am working on a project that assesses the effect of seasonal changes on the frequency of Jordanian women’s waterpipe smoking. I have published several articles that report adolescent tobacco use in Jordan and across the Middle East.
