Dr Marga Gual Soler
Senior Project Director, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
As a science diplomat, Dr. Marga Gual Soler explores the power of science as universal language to break down barriers and build bridges between peoples and nations. Her boundary-spanning perspective catalyzes the potential of academics, policymakers, governments, NGOs and international organizations to collaborate across political, geographical, disciplinary and cultural divides. She manages the AAAS-Cuba science diplomacy program, develops global science diplomacy education and training initiatives, leads research and capacity development on international science-policy mechanisms, and serves as associate editor of the policy journal Science & Diplomacy. Marga serves on the Research, Innovation and Science Experts High-Level Group to EU Commissioner Carlos Moedas and helped design the first Science, Technology and Innovation Diplomacy Strategy of the Spanish Government. She was a 2017 Aspen Ideas Festival Scholar, and in 2016 she was named one of “100 Spanish experts in innovation”, "40 Under 40 Latinos in Foreign Policy", and “10 Latinas Think Big Innovators to Watch in 2016.” Marga has published dozens of academic and policy works and appears frequently on English and Spanish media for analysis and commentary on science diplomacy. She received a PhD from University of Queensland in Australia and is an alumna of the Georgetown Global Competitiveness Leadership Program. When not on a plane you will find her scuba diving underwater paradises. Follow her @margagual.
