Prof. Cheong leads the Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) Research Team at Cancer Research Malaysia. Her goal is to improve HNC management through the understanding of genetic alterations in these cancers, and by building innovative tools for early detection and development of novel therapeutics.  Her research has resulted in the development of an immunotherapy that is currently in preclinical testing. Further, her team has developed a bioinformatics tool for prioritizing drugs that could be repurposed for the treatment of HNC. She has received research grants from the MRC, UK and awards including the Norman-Rowe Educational Trust, L’Oréal for Women in Science Award, and several UICC fellowships. She has published widely, and reviews papers and grants for international bodies including the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the African Medical Council amongst others. Prof. Cheong is an Adjunct Professor at University of Malaya, Malaysia, a Fellow of the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO) and the UICC. She is currently the Co-Chair of TWAS Young Affiliate Network (TYAN), and an honorary member of the Young Scientist Network (YSN) of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia.
