Roger took up the part-time position of Executive Secretary of ICSU's Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science in July 2016.

Roger’s day job is at the Royal Society Te Apārangi in New Zealand, leading a team that prepares and publishes advice to government and the public on important matters, and working with the research community to identify and encourage best practice in the research community.

Roger has a research background in atmospheric sciences and numerical modelling followed by various senior roles in the public sector covering economics, science, policy, investment and innovation. Roger holds a B.Sc. (Hons 1st Class) in Physics from Otago University and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Monash University.
