After growing up in Latin America (Guatemala and Nicaragua) and doing his undergraduate studies in Molecular Cell Biology and French Literature in the USA. Luis Alvarez returned to France to complete his Masters in Biomolecules and Experimental Therapies followed by his PhD in Physical Chemistry from Université Paris-Sud. Dr. Alvarez is an expert in quantitative molecular imaging and has focus his research in host-pathogen interactions. His work in Ireland at University College Dublin and the National Children's Research Centre focused in bacterial pathogens and mucosal immunity. He is now based at the University of Oxford working on viral entry (HIV) and developing advance dynamic quantitative imaging techniques to facilitate our understanding of infectious mechanisms. He was the founding chair for the University College Dublin Research Staff Association. He serves in the board of directors for the International Consortium of Research Staff Associations (ICoRSA) and is the chair for their Policy and Advocacy committee.
