To enter Jordan, a passport valid for six months is required by all nationalities.

All non-Jordanian nationalities are strongly advised to contact the Jordanian Embassy in their country to check visa and other potential requirements that may differ from country to country.

Visa Note

You can obtain the single-entry visa on arrival at any point of entry into Jordan, except at the Wadi Araba border crossing and the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge on the border between Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank. No Jordanian visas are issued at these crossings.

Wherever you go in Jordan you will find plenty of opportunities to shop. For visitors, there is a wide range of locally made handicrafts and other goods available at all the popular sites, as well as within the boutiques of the leading hotels and at the various visitors' centers. There you will find hand-woven rugs and cushions, beautifully embroidered items and clothing, traditional pottery, glassware, silver jewelry embedded with semi-precious stones, coffee pots, shisha, marquetry work, antiques and other artefacts. The list is endless and about as varied as you can imagine.

Take time to visit the souks in Jordan’s larger towns and cities. These are treasure troves for those seeking something a little bit out of the ordinary. Within the souks are also excellent gold and silver outlets, where some great bargains can be found. Also, worth visiting are the busy market shops, especially for exotic spices, herbs and seasonings. Top malls in Jordan are Taj Mall, City Mall, Galleria Mall, and Abdali Mall. Rainbow Street is a great tourist area, where many handicraft stores, coffee shops, and lounges overlook the paved lanes.

Friday is the weekly holiday. Banks, government offices and most businesses are closed on Saturdays as well. Many businesses, including airline offices, travel agencies and some shops also close on Thursday afternoon, although department stores and supermarkets remain open. A few businesses and shops close for some of Sunday as well.

Please note that the most reliable mode of public transportation in Jordan is taxis and we highly recommend that you do not use public buses or other modes of transportation.

Taxis are all yellow in Jordan and are available through the hotel’s concierge or you can stop one on the street. If you do take a taxi, then make sure that the driver turns the meter on and does not overcharge you. You may wish to tip the driver and a JOD 1 or maximum 2 is very reasonable.

You may also use Careem and Uber which both accept Visa, MasterCard and cash.

You may find it easier to download the apps of the two taxi service providers in Jordan and use them when you need transportation.

Airport Taxis are available near the arrival terminal and operate 24 hours a day. Prices are fixed by law and are posted in the taxi park at the terminals exits.

A taxi ride from the airport to Amman city center should cost around JOD20.00 (USD 28.19). We recommend that you agree on a price with the taxi driver before your ride, to avoid an inflated price or a detour during transportation.

Jordan has an excellent telecommunications infrastructure including three mobile networks, you can even buy prepaid GSM cards. You will also find Internet facilities in major hotels and in the form of Internet cafés in virtually all cities.

Besides Arabic newspapers, there is an excellent daily English-language newspaper, the Jordan Times. Major hotels also offer a wide variety of foreign newspapers and magazines.

Eating is the most popular national amusement hence the Jordanian cuisine is quite superior.

Most hotels offer continental breakfast and buffet dinner with a choice of western and Arabic foods. Restaurants at sites usually offer traditional Arabic food or buffet lunches. In the major cities, you'll also find international restaurants, including McDonalds, Burger King and other healthy restaurants!

Tipping is generally accepted and welcomed in Jordan. At restaurants, a reasonable tip is 10% of your bill. For valets, bell boys, drivers, etc. a 2.00 JOD or (USD 3.000) is reasonable.

A driver who takes you on a long trip outside Amman will expect a higher tip which is left to your discretion depending on the duration and length of the trip.

The first thing you will notice when you arrive to Jordan is that the people are very warm and welcoming to tourists. You will be pleasantly surprised by the sense of security you will find in Jordan- it is one of the safest places to travel in the world. Jordan maintains good relations with ALL its neighbors and is truly an oasis of peace in this region. The country is liberal and westernized.

Jordan has a long and pleasant spring and fall, from March through May and from September through November. Rain occasionally falls from December to April. The summer months are hot but with little humidity. In the Jordan Valley, around the Dead Sea and in Aqaba on the Red Sea the winters are pleasant.

As for the Dead Sea in specific, you can find sunny skies almost year round. In the summer the temperature rises to 40ºc and can sometimes reach 48ºc. The winter is still relatively warm. The temperature scarcely drops beneath 10ºc. The humidity of the air hardly exceeds 40% and it drops in the summer to an average of 23%.

The dress code in Jordan in general is modest. It is acceptable to wear whatever you want as long as it is not too revealing or disrespectful of some of the conservative communities.

·      During the forum, participants are advised to wear business or smart casual attire.

·      We advise you to wear comfortable and conservative clothes if you are going on sightseeing tours. Pants are very much acceptable attire for women in Jordan.

·      The weather tends to turn a little cold at night so you may want to bring a light jacket or shawl to use in the evenings.

The electricity supply in Jordan is 230V/50Hz, but several types of plugs and sockets are commonly used: e.g. European with round pins, British standard with three pins, rectangular, Indian and combination sockets that can take multiple types.

Arabic is the official language. English is widely spoken throughout the kingdom. Most road signs are in English.

The Jordanian Dinar (JD) is divided into 1,000 fills, although many people refer to piasters. One piaster equals 10 fills, so there are 100 piasters in a dinar.

Coins: 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250 fills, 1/2 and 1 dinar.

You will get the best exchange rate at exchange shops and banks, although the banks at the borders and in the airports, charge a small commission. If you carry travelers’ checks, you will be charged a commission ranging from JD 3 to JD 8 even at a bank, sometimes for each check, so carry larger denominations. Hotels will charge a premium for changing money, so try to avoid this. All Banks are closed on Fridays and Saturdays except in shopping malls, they usually open after 2 PM.

Jordan is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Tine, or three hours ahead when in Daylight Savings time from the last Friday in March till the last Friday in October.
